There is no waiting list, and your stay is reimbursable by the HSE under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive.

All conditions we treat

Rehabilitation abroad, reimbursable by the HSE

Under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, inpatient rehabilitation at Evexia Plus is reimbursable by the HSE if you are entitled to public healthcare in Ireland. You pay the hospital directly, then claim the cost back. You don't need a medical card or private insurance.

Five steps, from referral to reimbursement

  1. GP or consultant referral

A referral letter from your GP, or from a hospital consultant who sees you as a public patient.

  2. Outpatient consultation

In person, dated after the referral: with a public consultant in Ireland or, as we recommend, with our physician on a day before admission, with no wait for an outpatient appointment in Ireland.

  3. Optional Prior Notification

It gives an indicative figure, not a guarantee, and the HSE's reply can take months. We usually advise going ahead without it.

  4. Travel and treatment

You travel to Evexia Plus for your inpatient programme and pay the hospital directly, after a written estimate in English. One family member stays free.

  5. Claim your reimbursement

With the documents we give you at discharge. The HSE repays what you paid, up to what the same care would cost in the Irish public system.

After difficult operation of acetabulum and hip I couldn't choose better place then this.(enought is to see the surrounding and enterier inside and of the rooms) Everyday with big happiness i wait for my physiotherapy,as is helping me very much,..not to talk about the girls working there, who are so kind and with smile giving everything of themself in order to help us to become normal.I am thinking how much effort and strenght you need to be in their place and after all pain they see from patients, still to be able to smile .... The rest of the stuff is also very ptofesional and good,so i am reccomanding the place and i wish you to make this choice as i did,as you will not regret.

Everything was excellent and very professional. This rehabilitation center deserves the highest rating. My injury was a broken hip and after physio and hydro therapy, I was able to return home and walk with little assistance up the flight of stairs to my home. I thank all those involved in my recovery, my physio therapists, my hydro therapist, the nurses and doctors and all the staff. I highly recommend this center.

Questions about rehabilitation abroad

Waiting for a rehabilitation bed in Ireland?

You don't have to wait for one. There is no waiting list at Evexia Plus: once our physician has reviewed your medical records, you choose your admission date. Your stay is reimbursable by the HSE under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, and you can call us while you are still on a list in Ireland.

Who can use the EU Cross-Border Directive from Ireland?

Anyone ordinarily resident in the Republic of Ireland who is entitled to public healthcare. You don't need a medical card, and having private health insurance doesn't exclude you. The claim is made in the patient's name.

Is this the Treatment Abroad Scheme?

No. The Treatment Abroad Scheme is a separate HSE scheme for treatment that isn't available in Ireland, and it needs approval before you travel. Rehabilitation at Evexia Plus comes under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive: you pay the hospital, then claim the cost back from the HSE.

How much does the HSE repay?

What you paid, up to what the same care would cost in the Irish public system. Before you commit, our team sends you a written estimate in English, so you can plan.

When does the HSE repay?

After it has assessed your claim, using the documents we give you at discharge. Repayment currently takes several months, so plan to pay for the stay first. Our How it works page sets out each step.

Do I need a referral before I call you?

No. You can call us first, and we tell you what the referral letter should say. Before treatment, you need one from your GP, or from a hospital consultant who sees you as a public patient.

Do I need Prior Notification?

No, it is optional. It gives an indicative figure, not a guarantee, and the HSE's reply can take months. We usually advise going ahead without it, because the HSE assesses every claim after treatment either way.

Is Evexia Plus step-down care after a hospital stay?

Not quite. Step-down or convalescent care usually means rest and nursing support while you get stronger. Evexia Plus is a Rehabilitation Hospital: active treatment, with at least 3 hours of therapy a day led by a rehabilitation physician. You can come to us after a hospital stay in Ireland, once your doctors say you are fit to travel.

We don't live in Dublin. Does that change anything?

No. Everything is arranged the same way from Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford or anywhere else in the Republic of Ireland. Only the flight differs: Dublin has the direct flight to Thessaloniki, and the other airports connect through a European hub.

What if I become unwell during my stay?

Doctors and nurses are on site 24 hours a day, with an on-site laboratory, X-ray and ultrasound. If hospital care is ever needed, Thessaloniki's university hospitals are about 30 minutes away by ambulance.

What happens when I go home?

Occupational therapy prepares a plan for home, and we send a discharge letter to your GP or consultant in Ireland. You also leave with every document your HSE claim needs.
